Today, we had calligraphy practice at Myoshin-ji, led by this super 上手 monk man. Just watching him swoop the brush around was, well, beautiful
I picked 創 (そう), which = creation, since crafting things makes me happy. Mine didn’t come out all that great, but hey, it was fun

In Japan, this is what you get when you smush together tradition & pop culture

Hatsune Miku (the famed computerized vocalist) sings the Buddhist Heart Sutra

The religion & Japanese culture professor showed us this video in class

My favorite part is perhaps the bit after 1:20

(this = Japan in a nutshell?)

From last Friday, a visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha. The shrine with at least a thousand orange 鳥居 (torii)
I usually don’t post individually about sightseeing visits since they get included in my weekly videos, but I’ve been so looking forward to seeing this place in person, that I thought it deserved its own post
Plus it was really pretty, even in the rain

I really think that there’s a negative correlation

between abundance of trash cans and cleanliness in this country.

For instance

Town 1: Zeze, Otsu-shi

Cleanliness: 8/10. once I saw a woman picking up paper waste off her front porch with chopsticks

Trash can availability: 0.5/10. The only one I know of is at the train station

Town 2: Hakata station area, Fukuoka-shi

Cleanliness: 5.5/10. Cleanish most places but definitely more litter and graffiti here

Trash can availability: 3/10. More available, still kinda sparse though

    • #there are no trash cans in this country!
